The Marks \u00b7 Three
The Circle
The Circle is the oldest institution there is: men bound to one another by oath, meeting as equals under a sign.
The Form
Equals Under One Sign
Every institution men have built — the firm, the state, the university, the army — arranges them in a ladder. The Circle is the opposite arrangement. It has a centre and a boundary, and no rungs.
That is its whole purpose. Men who carry command all day need one room where command is irrelevant, where a question is asked of a peer and not of a subordinate, and where no one is being assessed. The Order has kept that room for a very long time.
The Bond
What an Oath Actually Does
An oath sworn among men does not magically alter them. What it does is make an expectation explicit and irreversible: that this conversation is held in confidence, that this man's difficulty will not become tomorrow's anecdote, that what is built between equals is not spent for advantage.
The word binds without release, which is why the Order does not administer it cheaply, and why not all who ask are given it.
The Practice
What Happens In The Circle
The Order does not gather to exchange contacts, or to be seen gathering.
What passes in the Circle is a man thinking aloud among equals — examining the decision beneath the decision and the motive beneath the motive, with people who carry comparable weight and keep comparable silence. Counsel is not given as instruction. It is offered, tested, and taken or left.
The Lineage
Older Than Its Members
The Circle outlives everyone presently in it. That fact sets the standard: what is done in its name is judged by whether the Order is stronger or weaker for it after the men responsible are gone.
It also sets the Order's posture toward the world. We do not seek to be seen, because recognition is not the object. The object is that the work continues.
Questions
What Is Asked Of Us
Is this an executive peer network?
The outside world calls it that, and the description is not wrong — but it is the outside word. Within the Order it is simply the Circle: equals under one sign, which is an older arrangement than any professional network.
How large is the Order?
The Order does not publish numbers, and it does not publish names. Both would serve the observer rather than the work.
Is the Circle a networking opportunity?
No. Men have come expecting introductions and found none. What the Circle offers is a place to be candid, which is rarer and not transferable.
What binds members to each other?
An oath, freely taken, and the habit of keeping it. That is all, and it has proved sufficient for a very long time.
The Next Mark
From the Circle, the Order turns to the work each man must do alone: the Ascent.
