The Marks \u00b7 Four

The Ascent

Command of others begins as command of oneself. The Ascent is the Order's name for that work \u2014 lifelong, unglamorous, and never finished.

Why It Matters

The Man Is The Instrument

Influence without self-mastery is a hazard to everyone near it. A man who cannot govern his own appetites, temper and fear will eventually spend other people's interests to satisfy them, and he will do it the moment it seems necessary.

This is why the Order tests for discipline before it seats anyone. Not wealth, not title, not reach — discipline. Those things can be lost in a season. What a man is does not move so easily.

The Common Error

Ambition Is Not The Ascent

Ambition pushes outward. The Ascent turns inward first. The man who mistakes one for the other will climb quickly and arrive with nothing he can hold, because he never removed the part of himself that made the climb necessary.

The Order has no interest in the merely ambitious. It has considerable interest in men who can hold power without being held by it — and those are far fewer.

The Practice

Four Disciplines

The Ascent is kept through ordinary, repetitive practices. There is nothing mystical about them.

  • Attention — deciding what deserves to be thought about, and refusing the rest. A mind that responds to everything has authority over nothing.
  • Appetite — understanding what a man actually wants, as distinct from what he has been trained to chase.
  • Temper — the practice of not spending in a moment what was built over years. Most ruined men were ruined by a single hour.
  • Solitude — time deliberately kept out of reach of the world's demands, without which none of the other three can be maintained.

The Standard

How Progress Is Judged

Not by income, which fluctuates. Not by position, which is conferred. The Order judges the Ascent by a harder measure: whether the man has become someone whose word can be relied upon when it costs him something.

That is the whole of it. Everything else the world recognises is secondary at best.

Questions

What Is Asked Of Us

Does the Order promise success or wealth?

No, and any site promising you either in the Order's name is a counterfeit. The Ascent promises nothing but the work. What a man makes of it is his own affair.

Do I need to be wealthy to be considered?

No. Wealth is not a criterion of the Order and never has been. Discipline is. There have been members of great means and members of none, and the Circle makes no distinction between them.

Is this self-help?

It is a discipline kept among men who hold each other to it, which is the difference between a practice and a book.

How long does the Ascent take?

The remainder of a life. Anyone offering you a completion date has misunderstood the exercise entirely.

The Tenets

The marks describe the Order from outside. The tenets describe it from within, and they are the harder reading.
