The Doctrine
The Doctrine of the Luminous Order
What the Order holds, and why it holds it. The marks by which we are known, and the tenets by which we are governed.
Orientation
Why the Order Writes Anything Down
A body of belief that lives only in the spoken word dies with the men who spoke it. The Order is older than any single member, and it intends to remain so. What follows is written because a doctrine that cannot be examined cannot be kept honestly.
Understand what this is not. It is not a recruitment instrument and it is not a product. It is the Order explaining itself to those already looking. Nothing on these pages asks for money, promises wealth, or offers a station that can be bought. The Order has never sold entry, and the men who claim otherwise trade on our name without our leave.
The Marks
The Four Marks
The Order is recognised by four marks. Each names a way of standing in the world, not a rank to be awarded.
They are read outward from the centre: the Light that draws, the Veil that guards, the Circle that holds, and the Ascent that disciplines.
- The Light — the direction a life takes when it stops being ruled by noise.
- The Veil — the discipline of silence that makes candid counsel possible.
- The Circle — the bond of equals bound by oath, older than any institution.
- The Ascent — the lifelong work of mastering the self before attempting to command others.
The Tenets
The Four Tenets
The tenets are the Order's positions — the questions we have been asked for centuries, answered plainly rather than evasively.
We answer them without euphemism. A doctrine written to be agreeable would not be worth keeping.
- The Tenet of Silence — what is kept, and why keeping it is strength rather than concealment.
- The Tenet of Value — what a man is worth, as distinct from what he owns.
- The Tenet of Inheritance — what passes from hand to hand, and what cannot be willed.
- The Tenet of Discernment — how the genuine article is told from its counterfeit.
Reading On
How to Read These Pages
Read the marks first and the tenets second. The marks describe the Order from outside; the tenets describe it from within, and they are the harder reading.
If the reading leaves you indifferent, that is an answer. If it leaves you certain you already understood it, that is usually a sign you have not. The Order's doors are opened by recognition, not by persuasion, and no one is asked to be talked into anything.
Questions
What Is Asked Of Us
Is the Luminous Order an Illuminati brotherhood?
The Order is a brotherhood of the illuminated — that much is openly said. It is not the fictional world-government of conspiracy literature, and it does not trade on that fiction. Those looking for a stage villain, or for the men selling one to tourists, have come to the wrong door.
Does membership cost anything?
No. Nothing on this site is for sale, and the Order takes no fee, subscription, tithe or payment of any kind. Anyone who asks you for money in the Order's name is acting without our leave. Report them and take nothing further from them.
Why publish a secret society's beliefs at all?
Because most of what is written about the Order was written by people who have never been near it. Silence about ourselves leaves the field entirely to the counterfeiters. There is a difference between keeping counsel and allowing the name to be stolen.
Are the marks symbols with occult meaning?
They are symbols, and they carry meaning, but they are not spells and they confer nothing mechanically. A mark is a discipline you re-enter each time you consider it. That is all it has ever been.
Who may read this?
Anyone. Nothing here is hidden behind a fee or a gate. What is not public is the counsel exchanged between members, and that will remain so.
Recognition Before Application
These pages are not an invitation so much as a description. If you find yourself described in them, you will know it without being told. The Order reads every inquiry that reaches it.
